Background:

The coquí is a small frog that’s become a special symbol of Puerto Rico. Even though it’s not official, it represents the island’s nature and culture in a big way. People in Puerto Rico really love the coquí—you’ll see it in music, art, and stories.

It’s a big part of what reminds people of home. Even though the frog is tiny, its call is very loud. The male coquí makes a “co-quí” sound that you can hear all around, especially at night. Coquís are native to Puerto Rico, and more than 17 different kinds are found on the island. They live mostly in places like El Yunque rainforest, where it’s warm and humid.

To many people, the coquí represents the heart and spirit of Puerto Rico—something small, but strong, and deeply loved by those on the island and those living away from it.
